Video Conferencing applications require a high-speed or "broadband"
connection to the Internet (unless a private network is used). This
allows large audio and video files to be transferred both upstream and
downstream in real-time without latency or unacceptable loss of sound or
image quality.
There are many broadband technologies available today. These
include DSL, cable, satellite and wireless Internet access connectivity.
For web conferencing applications, some types of broadband technologies are
better than others. For example, although ADSL is great for surfing
the net, it is not as attractive for video conferencing, as its "pipeline"
to send files is much smaller than its pipeline to receive data. SDSL
or "symmetrical" DSL, is often therefore a better choice than asymmetrical
DSL (ADSL) for web conferencing applications.
